Government efforts to lower subsidies to unprofitable enterprises and to shrink the money supply caused the semi-official exchange rate for the Cuban peso to move from a peak of 120 to the dollar in the summer of 1994 to 21 to the dollar by yearend 1999. On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor due to an explosion of undetermined origin. It has been said that the explosion was accidental, and recent research seems to indicate so; but at the time, the American press blamed it squarely on the Spanish. This incident helped galvanize support in the United States to enter the conflict (which fed the rumour that they blew the ship up themselves to create an excuse to enter the war). Taínos and Ciboney took part in similar customs and beliefs, one being the sacred ritual practiced using tobacco called cohaba, known in English as smoking. The Europeans were shown by the Native Cubans how to nurture tobacco and consume it in the form of cigars. The Palo belief system rests on two main pillars: the belief in natural (“earth”) powers, and the veneration of the spirits of the dead. Thus, natural objects, and particularly sticks (hence the word “palo”, meaning “stick”), can be infused with powers, often linked to the powers of spirits. These objects are known as “nganga” and are the physical centre of Palo rituals. Manipulation of the "nganga" is often considered a form of magic (particularly "black magic") and thus highly secretive. The economy of Cuba is based on state ownership with some small scale private enterprise existing at the fringes. Tourism has become one of the largest sources of income for Cuba, and in 1993 the U.S. dollar was made legal tender (the country operated under a dual-currency system); this arrangement was, however, revoked on 25 October 2004. Many Natives Cuban Indians died due to the brutality of Spanish conquistadores. And the diseases they brought with them, such as the measles and smallpox, which were previously unknown to Indians. This extraterritorial U.S. legislation is considered highly controversial, and the US embargo was condemned for the 13th time in 2004 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, by 179 countries. Additionally, US Congress members from both parties have openly criticized the ongoing balance of resources which have been committed to enforcing this embargo. In response to the seizure of American properties and the increased repression carried out by Castro's government on the people, the U.S. broke diplomatic relations on January 3, 1961 and imposed the U.S. embargo against Cuba on February 3, 1962. The embargo is still in effect as of 2005, although some humanitarian trade in food and medicines is now allowed. At first, the embargo didn't extend to other countries and Cuba trades with most European, Asian and Latin American countries and especially Canada. Cuba once had a small but vibrant Jewish population, and Havana still has one or two active synagogues. The boom in Cuba's sugar industry in the 1800's made it necessary for Cuba to improve its means of transportation. They needed safe and efficient ways to transport the sugar from the plantations to the ports, in order to maximize their returns. A certain number of spirits are well-known in name and deed, and are factually venerated as gods. These spirits find their equivalent in the orishas –or gods- of Santería and the Catholic saints. Thus the spirit “Bomasere” (also known as “Nsisi”, “Siete Rayos” and various other names) is the equivalent of “Changó” in Santería and Saint Barbara in Catholicism. Many new roads were built, and old roads were quickly repaired. Cuba even saw railroads pop up, which changed the way that sugar was transported. It was now possible for plantations all over this large island to have their sugar shipped quickly and easily. The prosperity seen from the boom in sugar production is a major reason that Cuba became predominantly Spanish. Many Spaniards immigrated to Cuba, calling it a place of refuge. Cuba's major trading partners include Spain, Canada, France, Italy, United Kingdom and Japan. The U.S. embargo against Cuba applies to all goods, except the export of medicine and medical products and agricultural commodities to Cuba, which are authorized by law.
