To capture the hard currency flowing into the island through tourism and remittances - estimated at $500-800 million annually - the government has set up state-run "dollar stores" throughout Cuba that sell 'luxury' food, household, and clothing items, compared with basic necessities, which are still bought using the Cuban peso. It is assumed that Santería and popular Catholicism are the most widely followed religious beliefs in Cuba, though these are by no means exclusive, and one can easily be a follower of several religious currents at the same time, as well as being a member of the communist party. Pentacostalism is also growing rapidly, and the Assemblies of God alone claims a membership of over 100,000 people. These reforms did not dampen the Cuban spirit for independence. José Martí Pérez, Cuba's national hero, began the final push for independence in 1895. He is joined by many veterans of the Ten Year War including Generals Máximo Gómez, Antonio Maceo and Calixto García. On May 19, José Martí is killed in the Battle of Dos Ríos. In 1896, General Maceo is successful in taking the war to the westernmost provinces, such as Mantua, of Cuba, although he is killed on December 7 in the Battle of Punta Brava.
