President Gerardo Machado, originally elected by popular vote in 1925, was constitutionally barred from reelection. He decided to stay in power anyway as the head of a military government with some support from the United States. In 1933, a number of liberal Cubans staged an uprising which deposed Machado and led to a series of short-lived governments. A key figure in the process was Fulgencio Batista, an army sergeant, who originally organized a non-commissioned officer revolt in September 1933. After some time, he decided to become de-facto dictator, wielding significant power behind the scenes until he was elected president in 1940 in an election which many people considered to be rigged. His rule was marked by corruption and violence to opponents. Batista was voted out of office in 1944. A certain number of spirits are well-known in name and deed, and are factually venerated as gods. These spirits find their equivalent in the orishas –or gods- of Santería and the Catholic saints. Thus the spirit “Bomasere” (also known as “Nsisi”, “Siete Rayos” and various other names) is the equivalent of “Changó” in Santería and Saint Barbara in Catholicism. Santeria was historically practiced primarily by descendants of west African slaves in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, and in Hispanic population centers in the United States such as Florida, New York, and California, but its popularity is spreading to all corners of the globe, to all different kinds of people. Set monthly fees must be paid regardless of income earned and frequent inspections yield stiff fines when any of the many self-employment regulations are violated. Rather than expanding private sector opportunities, in recent years, the government has been attempting to squeeze more of these private sector entrepreneurs out of business and back to the public sector. Many have opted to enter the informal economy or black market. Spain sent Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete commander of the Spanish Armada with a large number of reinforcements to fight the rebellion from the East. The US Navy blockaded the entrance of Santiago Bay where Admiral Cervera’s fleet was anchored. Cuba is divided into 14 provinces of 169 municipalities, and one special municipality (the Isla de la Juventud). The country had to import all other necessary goods. The unicameral Cuban parliament is the National Assembly of People's Power or Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular. Its 609 members are elected to serve five-year terms, without opposition. The candidates, who may or may not be members of the Cuban Communist Party, are nominated by pro-government social and political organizations. With increased fertilizers and management attention, subsequent harvests have improved but remain well below the 1989 level. Prospects for regaining that level of output are poor unless the Cuban Government undertakes substantial reform of the sugar industry, something it has been reluctant to do. The Platt Amendment was abolished in 1934 and the Guantanamo Naval Base agreement was renegotiated granting Cuba and her trading partners free access through the bay, modifying the lease payment from $2,000 in gold coins per year, to the 1934 equivalent value of $4,085 U.S. Treasury Dollars, and adding a requirement that termination of the lease requires the consent of both the U.S. and Cuba governments, or the abandonment of the base property by the U.S.
