The Cuban economy is still recovering from a decline in gross domestic product of at least 35 percent between 1989 and 1993 due to the loss of Soviet subsidies. The government has undertaken several reforms in recent years to stem excess liquidity, increase labour incentives, and alleviate serious shortages of food, consumer goods, and services. The Cuban Government continues to adhere to socialist principles in organizing its state-controlled economy. Most of the means of production are owned and run by the government and about 75 percent of the labour force is employed by the state. The state under the durable leadership of Fidel Castro plays the primary role in the domestic economy and controls practically all foreign trade. Spain sent Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete commander of the Spanish Armada with a large number of reinforcements to fight the rebellion from the East. The US Navy blockaded the entrance of Santiago Bay where Admiral Cervera’s fleet was anchored. The Native Cuban Indian population, including the Ciboney and the Taíno, were forced in to reservations during the Spanish subdual of the Island of Cuba. Many Natives were put in reservations. One famous reservation was known as Guanabacoa, today a suburb of Havana. The elongated island of Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean and is bounded to the north by the Straits of Florida and the greater North Atlantic Ocean, to the northwest by the Gulf of Mexico, to the west by the Yucatan Channel, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Windward Passage. These reforms did not dampen the Cuban spirit for independence. José Martí Pérez, Cuba's national hero, began the final push for independence in 1895. He is joined by many veterans of the Ten Year War including Generals Máximo Gómez, Antonio Maceo and Calixto García. On May 19, José Martí is killed in the Battle of Dos Ríos. In 1896, General Maceo is successful in taking the war to the westernmost provinces, such as Mantua, of Cuba, although he is killed on December 7 in the Battle of Punta Brava. Cuba and its originally Amerindian population (Taino, Siboney and Guanajatabey) came under Spanish control in the 16th century. The colony's struggle for independence started in 1868 and continued during the 19th century until the Spanish-American War of 1898. The United States occupied the island until its independence was granted in 1902, though limited by the Platt Amendment (revoked in 1934), after which the US continued to have a major influence in Cuban affairs. It is assumed that Santería and popular Catholicism are the most widely followed religious beliefs in Cuba, though these are by no means exclusive, and one can easily be a follower of several religious currents at the same time, as well as being a member of the communist party. Pentacostalism is also growing rapidly, and the Assemblies of God alone claims a membership of over 100,000 people. A key figure in the process was Fulgencio Batista, an army sergeant, who originally organized a non-commissioned officer revolt in September 1933. After some time, he decided to become de-facto dictator, wielding significant power behind the scenes until he was elected president in 1940 in an election which many people considered to be rigged. His rule was marked by corruption and violence to opponents. Batista was voted out of office in 1944. Sugar remains an important part of the Cuban economy with large amounts of land, labour, and other resources dedicated to the industry. Sugar production in 1989 was over 8 million tons, but fell to about 3.5 million tons in the 1994-95 harvest, one of the lowest on record.
