Cuba Tourist Board

Sources of Cuba Tourist Board information from the Web

So...you're looking for Cuba Tourist Board. The Cubans will tell you that there is so much more to see and do in Cuba than just what you see in the brochure.

Whether its a holiday, on business, or for a short break Cuba continues to increase in popularity amongst us Brits - and rightly so!

That's why its important to get your travel plans sorted out properly, and in our opinion, flight, holiday and hotel specialists Opodo offer the best service online - but you can find that out for yourself here...

African slaves were imported to work the plantations in order to replace the field labor. Slavery became especially important when Cuba's sugar plantations became important world producers. By the end of the 19th century Slavery was abolished.

However, in response to stricter economic sanctions by the US, the Cuban government decided in October 2004 to remove the American dollar from circulation. In its place, the Cuban convertible peso will be used, which although not internationally traded, has a value pegged to that of the dollar.

A new government, led by the reborn Communist Party of Cuba, began carrying out the economic reforms that Castro had promised. Among other things, healthcare and education were made freely available to all Cubans for the first time. After some delay, a Constitution of Soviet inspiration was adopted in 1976.

Che Guevara, Fidel Castro Rus, Camilo Cienfuegos, Raúl Castro Rus and their rebel army were one of many guerilla groups that opposed the dictator Fulgencio Batista. Castro's 'July 26 Movement' subsumed these other groups quickly and took over Cuba's government in 1959, following its victory against Batista's military forces. At the time when Batista was deposed, 75% of Cuba's farmable land was owned by foreign individuals or foreign companies (mostly US companies).

The Cuban Government defaulted on most of its international debt in 1986 and does not have access to credit from international financial institutions like the World Bank, which means Havana must rely heavily on short-term loans to finance imports, chiefly food and fuel. Because of its poor credit rating, and $11 billion hard currency debt, and the risks associated with Cuban investment, interest rates have reportedly been as high as 22 percent.

On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor due to an explosion of undetermined origin. It has been said that the explosion was accidental, and recent research seems to indicate so; but at the time, the American press blamed it squarely on the Spanish. This incident helped galvanize support in the United States to enter the conflict (which fed the rumour that they blew the ship up themselves to create an excuse to enter the war).

The boom in Cuba's sugar industry in the 1800's made it necessary for Cuba to improve its means of transportation. They needed safe and efficient ways to transport the sugar from the plantations to the ports, in order to maximize their returns.

As soon as Spain opened Cuba's ports up to foreign ships a great sugar boom began that lasted until the 1880s. The Island was perfect for growing sugar. It is dominated by rolling plains, with rich soil, and adequate rainfall. It is the only island big enough to build roads, and railroads on, and has the best ports in the area. By 1860 Cuba was devoted to growing sugar.

Taíno and Siboney or Ciboney. These two groups were prehistoric cultures in a time period during which humans created tools from stone. The Taíno were agriculturalist and the Ciboney were a self-sufficient society, although their evolution was not limited to fishing and hunting, farming and production of wooden structures.

Another consideration here is that Cuba already was a very poor country in 1959 and hardly any capitalist poor countries (which constitute the majority in the world) have managed to escape poverty in the 20th century, so political orientation doesn't seem to be the determining factor.

In response to the seizure of American properties and the increased repression carried out by Castro's government on the people, the U.S. broke diplomatic relations on January 3, 1961 and imposed the U.S. embargo against Cuba on February 3, 1962. The embargo is still in effect as of 2005, although some humanitarian trade in food and medicines is now allowed. At first, the embargo didn't extend to other countries and Cuba trades with most European, Asian and Latin American countries and especially Canada.

A key figure in the process was Fulgencio Batista, an army sergeant, who originally organized a non-commissioned officer revolt in September 1933. After some time, he decided to become de-facto dictator, wielding significant power behind the scenes until he was elected president in 1940 in an election which many people considered to be rigged. His rule was marked by corruption and violence to opponents. Batista was voted out of office in 1944.

Tomás Estrada Palma was elected as the first President of Cuba. At the end of his term in 1905, he tried to cling to power and a liberal revolt ensued. The U.S. sent troops to end the revolt in 1906 and they remained until 1909.
