Cuba failed to prosper before the 1760s due to Spanish trade regulations. Spain had set up a monopoly in the Caribbean and their primary objective was to protect this. They did not allow the islands to trade with any foreign ships. As part of the revolutionary process, the Platt Amendment was repealed. Still, American pressure forced Cuba to reaffirm the agreement which was imposed on the country in 1903 which leased the Guantanamo Bay naval base to the United States for a nominal sum, under terms which many Cubans at the time found (and still find) objectionable and colonialistic. As soon as Spain opened Cuba's ports up to foreign ships a great sugar boom began that lasted until the 1880s. The Island was perfect for growing sugar. It is dominated by rolling plains, with rich soil, and adequate rainfall. It is the only island big enough to build roads, and railroads on, and has the best ports in the area. By 1860 Cuba was devoted to growing sugar. This Amendment also granted to the U.S. the right to establish naval bases on the island and, under its charter, the U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay was established in 1903. The Palo belief system rests on two main pillars: the belief in natural (“earth”) powers, and the veneration of the spirits of the dead. Thus, natural objects, and particularly sticks (hence the word “palo”, meaning “stick”), can be infused with powers, often linked to the powers of spirits. These objects are known as “nganga” and are the physical centre of Palo rituals. Manipulation of the "nganga" is often considered a form of magic (particularly "black magic") and thus highly secretive. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 dealt Cuba a giant economic blow and when the Soviets stopped their 6 billion Dollars per year subsidy, the Cuban communist government called for "a special period" of recovery. The slaves found a way around this by masking the Orishas as Christian saints while maintaing their original identities. The masters thought their slaves had become good Christians and were praising the saints, when in actuality they were continuing their traditional practices. Santería is often thought by outsiders to be a polytheistic religion, but it is not. All true followers of Lukumí know that there is only one God and the Orishas are just expressions of the divine that people can comprehend. Cuba's precarious economic position is complicated by the high price it must pay for foreign financing. On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor due to an explosion of undetermined origin. It has been said that the explosion was accidental, and recent research seems to indicate so; but at the time, the American press blamed it squarely on the Spanish. This incident helped galvanize support in the United States to enter the conflict (which fed the rumour that they blew the ship up themselves to create an excuse to enter the war). Santeria was historically practiced primarily by descendants of west African slaves in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, and in Hispanic population centers in the United States such as Florida, New York, and California, but its popularity is spreading to all corners of the globe, to all different kinds of people.
