Many new roads were built, and old roads were quickly repaired. Cuba even saw railroads pop up, which changed the way that sugar was transported. It was now possible for plantations all over this large island to have their sugar shipped quickly and easily. The prosperity seen from the boom in sugar production is a major reason that Cuba became predominantly Spanish. Many Spaniards immigrated to Cuba, calling it a place of refuge.

The Spanish established sugar cane and tobacco as Cuba's primary products. As the native Indian population became mestizied and educated, field labor became scarce. Natives from Florida and Bahama were imported as slaves, and as that population became mixed as well, field labor was harder to come by.

Havana is the largest city and capital, other major cities include Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey. Some of the well-known smaller towns are Baracoa which was the first Spanish settlement on Cuba, as well as Trinidad and Bayamo.

The number of followers of Palo Monte in Cuba is not known, though it is assumed that a slight majority of Cubans, particularly in the African-influenced cities of Havana, Matanzas, and in the Eastern provinces, believe in all or part of its principles, especially in conjunction with Santería.

The Palo belief system rests on two main pillars: the belief in natural (“earth”) powers, and the veneration of the spirits of the dead. Thus, natural objects, and particularly sticks (hence the word “palo”, meaning “stick”), can be infused with powers, often linked to the powers of spirits. These objects are known as “nganga” and are the physical centre of Palo rituals. Manipulation of the "nganga" is often considered a form of magic (particularly "black magic") and thus highly secretive.

Many (especially US) historians believe that a long, protracted stalemate as in the Ten Years' War was likely without US intervention; others (especially Cubans) prefer to characterize US intervention as an unnecessary mopping up operation in a war largely already won by the Cuban revolutionaries. Spain sent over one million men to Cuba, and only about 200,000 returned. The rest died in combat, succumbed to tropical diseases, or stayed in Cuba to avoid the widespread poverty in Spain.

A key figure in the process was Fulgencio Batista, an army sergeant, who originally organized a non-commissioned officer revolt in September 1933. After some time, he decided to become de-facto dictator, wielding significant power behind the scenes until he was elected president in 1940 in an election which many people considered to be rigged. His rule was marked by corruption and violence to opponents. Batista was voted out of office in 1944.
