For the next 30 years, Castro pursued closer relations with the Soviet Union until the demise of the USSR in 1991.

Cuba is notable for its national organic agriculture initiative, undertaken in order to feed a population faced with starvation. In the early 1990s, post-Soviet Union, Cuba lost over 70% of agricultural chemical imports, over 50% of food imports, and an equally significant amount of oil. Its agricultural sector, built on a large-scale, mechanized, chemical-based model, was instantly crippled.

The good relations of Cuba and Chávez's Venezuela have resulted in agreements that Venezuela provides cheap oil and Cuba sends "missions" of their doctors to improve the Venezuelan health system

Many of the Conquistadors intermarried with Native Cuban Indians. Their children were called mestizo, but the Native Cubans called them Guajiro, which translates as "one of us". Today, the descendants are maintaining their heritage.

But now the USA pressures other nations and American companies in foreign soil to restrict trade with Cuba. This hinders Castro's historic argument blaming the U.S. for Cuba's grave economic situation. Then again, due to Cuba's location, such trade is hindered by high transportation costs. Also, the Helms-Burton Act of 1996 makes it very difficult for companies that do business with Cuba to also do business in the USA, effectively forcing internationals to choose between Cuba and the USA (an easy choice when money talks).

In 1993 the Cuban Government made it legal for its people to possess and use the U.S. dollar, nicknamed fula. Since then, the dollar has become the major currency in use. To capture the hard currency flowing into the island through tourism and remittances - estimated at $500-800 million annually - the government has set up state-run "dollar stores" throughout Cuba that sell 'luxury' food, household, and clothing items, compared with basic necessities, which are still bought using the Cuban peso.

By 1971 these so-called Freedom Flights took 250,000 Cubans to the United States. To this day, the fact that Castro's political repression and economic hardships has only increased induces Cubans to flee the island on make-shift rafts and other forms of migration. Currently, there is an immigration lottery allowing 20,000 Cubans seeking political assylum to go to the U.S. legally every year.

In 1996, the Clinton Administration enacted the Helms-Burton law. This law states, among other things, that any foreign company that "knowingly traffics in property in Cuba confiscated without compensation from a U.S. person" can be subjected to litigation and that company's leadership can be barred from entry into the United States. Sanctions may be applied to non-U.S. companies trading with Cuba. This legislation was enacted after the shootdown of two civilian planes by the Cuban regime.

When Spain opened the Cuban trade ports, it quickly became a popular place. New technology allowed a much more effective and efficient means of producing sugar. They began to use water mills, enclosed furnaces, and steam engines to produce a higher quality of sugar at a much more efficient pace than elsewhere in the Caribbean.

In 1878, the Spanish Captain General Arsenio Martínez-Campos Antón offered Cubans the Pact of Zanjón to end the war. It was signed on February 10, 1878 and it promised some reforms of the Spanish government in Cuba, including some elective institutions, and theoretically promised Cuban representation in the Spanish Cortes (courts).

The elongated island of Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean and is bounded to the north by the Straits of Florida and the greater North Atlantic Ocean, to the northwest by the Gulf of Mexico, to the west by the Yucatan Channel, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Windward Passage.

On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor due to an explosion of undetermined origin. It has been said that the explosion was accidental, and recent research seems to indicate so; but at the time, the American press blamed it squarely on the Spanish. This incident helped galvanize support in the United States to enter the conflict (which fed the rumour that they blew the ship up themselves to create an excuse to enter the war).

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Batista, who was running for president in the 1952 elections, but had only a small minority of votes, seized power in a bloodless coup three months before the election was to take place. President Prío did nothing to stop the coup, and therefore was forced to leave the island. Batista suspended the balloting and began ruling by decree.
