So...you're looking for Fishing In Cuba. The Cubans will tell you that there is so much more to see and do in Cuba than just what you see in the brochure.

Whether its a holiday, on business, or for a short break Cuba continues to increase in popularity amongst us Brits - and rightly so!

That's why its important to get your travel plans sorted out properly, and in our opinion, flight, holiday and hotel specialists Opodo offer the best service online - but you can find that out for yourself here...

The Communist Party is constitutionally recognised as Cuba's only legal political party, but is forbidden by law to nominate candidates. However this is largely a moot point since no known opponents of the government have been elected since the revolution.

Cuba is notable for its national organic agriculture initiative, undertaken in order to feed a population faced with starvation. In the early 1990s, post-Soviet Union, Cuba lost over 70% of agricultural chemical imports, over 50% of food imports, and an equally significant amount of oil. Its agricultural sector, built on a large-scale, mechanized, chemical-based model, was instantly crippled.

The United States then sponsored an unsuccessful attack on Cuba, using conservative political groups as the main source of support. The attack began on April 15, 1961, when exiles, flying planes provided by the U.S. bombed several Cuban air force bases. This attack did not succeed in destroying all of Castro's air force. In response, Castro declared Cuba a socialist state in a speech on April 16, 1961.

By 1971 these so-called Freedom Flights took 250,000 Cubans to the United States. To this day, the fact that Castro's political repression and economic hardships has only increased induces Cubans to flee the island on make-shift rafts and other forms of migration. Currently, there is an immigration lottery allowing 20,000 Cubans seeking political assylum to go to the U.S. legally every year.

Fidel Castro, a young lawyer from a wealthy family, who was running for a seat in the Chamber of Representatives for the Partido Ortodoxo, circulated a petition to depose Batista's government on the grounds that it had illegitimately suspended the electoral process. However, the petition was not acted upon by the courts.

When Spain opened the Cuban trade ports, it quickly became a popular place. New technology allowed a much more effective and efficient means of producing sugar. They began to use water mills, enclosed furnaces, and steam engines to produce a higher quality of sugar at a much more efficient pace than elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Congress passed the Teller Amendment distancing the U.S. from any claims over Cuba and stating that its goal was an independent Cuba. (see: Spanish-American War). At the time of the U.S. intervention on the war (April 1898), the Cuban revolutionaries had fought the Spanish government troops to another stalemate, holding control of the eastern half of the island.

A certain number of spirits are well-known in name and deed, and are factually venerated as gods. These spirits find their equivalent in the orishas –or gods- of Santería and the Catholic saints. Thus the spirit “Bomasere” (also known as “Nsisi”, “Siete Rayos” and various other names) is the equivalent of “Changó” in Santería and Saint Barbara in Catholicism.

Cuba is divided into 14 provinces of 169 municipalities, and one special municipality (the Isla de la Juventud).

Most of the large landholdings had been acquired in the 1920 period when world sugar prices were depressed, and the land could be bought at bargain-basement prices. In the intervening period, former Cuban governments friendly to these interests had kept these bargain prices as the basis for calculating property taxes, thus insuring that those taxes would be kept low.

Tensions between the two governments peaked again during the October 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when the U.S. blockaded Cuba to force the USSR to withdraw their newly-installed MRBMs from the country. The USSR agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for an agreement that the United States would not invade Cuba. The U.S. has honored this agreement, although the CIA continued to support anti-Castro groups by mounting an extensive international campaign and several botched assassination attempts throughout the 1960s.
