The Republic of Cuba is an archipelago in the northern Caribbean that lies between the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. To the north the United States are found, the Bahamas, to the west Mexico, to the south the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, and to the southeast Haiti. Che Guevara, Fidel Castro Rus, Camilo Cienfuegos, Raúl Castro Rus and their rebel army were one of many guerilla groups that opposed the dictator Fulgencio Batista. Castro's 'July 26 Movement' subsumed these other groups quickly and took over Cuba's government in 1959, following its victory against Batista's military forces. At the time when Batista was deposed, 75% of Cuba's farmable land was owned by foreign individuals or foreign companies (mostly US companies). In an unrelated matter six men were sentenced to death for hijacking a ferry with guns and knives, steering it into international waters where it ran out of fuel, and threatening to kill the passengers. Some accounts confused the two and accused Castro of sentencing dissidents to death, something which did not happen. A second ferry was hijacked, several days later and this time the hijackers were apprehended and executed within 24 hours of capture. Castro subsequently went into exile in Mexico. While in Mexico, he organized the 26th of July Movement with the goal of overthrowing Batista. A group of over 80 men sailed to Cuba on board the yacht "Granma", landing in the eastern part of the island in December 1956. Most of Castro's men were promptly killed or taken prisoner by Batista's forces. The Petition was however refused by the National Assembly, and a subsequent crackdown resulted in the imprisonment of 75 political prisoners for terms of up to 28 years on charges of collaborating with and receiving money from the US government. On May 10, Maceo is forced into exile by an order of the President of the Republic of Cuba in Arms. The rebel government ratified the Spanish peace terms on May 21, officially ending the war. Along with the other reforms, an emancipation law was passed in 1880 and fully implemented in 1886. Race relations improved and massive numbers of Spaniards immigrated to Cuba, even as Cuba became more economically linked to the United States than to Spain. The slaves found a way around this by masking the Orishas as Christian saints while maintaing their original identities. The masters thought their slaves had become good Christians and were praising the saints, when in actuality they were continuing their traditional practices. Santería is often thought by outsiders to be a polytheistic religion, but it is not. All true followers of Lukumí know that there is only one God and the Orishas are just expressions of the divine that people can comprehend. Cervera attempted an escape on July 3 beginning the Naval Battle of Santiago de Cuba. In a matter of hours, Cervera's fleet was destroyed, ensuring a swift end to the war. On October 1, Spain capitulated in the Treaty of Paris, yielding to the United States the territories of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippine Islands. A certain number of spirits are well-known in name and deed, and are factually venerated as gods. These spirits find their equivalent in the orishas –or gods- of Santería and the Catholic saints. Thus the spirit “Bomasere” (also known as “Nsisi”, “Siete Rayos” and various other names) is the equivalent of “Changó” in Santería and Saint Barbara in Catholicism. The Republic comprises the entire island, including many outlying islands such as the Isle of Youth, previously known as the Isle of Pine, with the exception of Guantanamo Bay, a naval base that has been leased by the United States since 1903. The mainland is the world's 16th largest island. A key figure in the process was Fulgencio Batista, an army sergeant, who originally organized a non-commissioned officer revolt in September 1933. After some time, he decided to become de-facto dictator, wielding significant power behind the scenes until he was elected president in 1940 in an election which many people considered to be rigged. His rule was marked by corruption and violence to opponents. Batista was voted out of office in 1944. In 1996, the Clinton Administration enacted the Helms-Burton law. This law states, among other things, that any foreign company that "knowingly traffics in property in Cuba confiscated without compensation from a U.S. person" can be subjected to litigation and that company's leadership can be barred from entry into the United States. Sanctions may be applied to non-U.S. companies trading with Cuba. This legislation was enacted after the shootdown of two civilian planes by the Cuban regime. In 1993 the Cuban Government made it legal for its people to possess and use the U.S. dollar, nicknamed fula. Since then, the dollar has become the major currency in use. To capture the hard currency flowing into the island through tourism and remittances - estimated at $500-800 million annually - the government has set up state-run "dollar stores" throughout Cuba that sell 'luxury' food, household, and clothing items, compared with basic necessities, which are still bought using the Cuban peso. Taínos and Ciboney took part in similar customs and beliefs, one being the sacred ritual practiced using tobacco called cohaba, known in English as smoking. The Europeans were shown by the Native Cubans how to nurture tobacco and consume it in the form of cigars.
