Taking advantage of the opportunity, Batista, who was running for president in the 1952 elections, but had only a small minority of votes, seized power in a bloodless coup three months before the election was to take place. President Prío did nothing to stop the coup, and therefore was forced to leave the island. Batista suspended the balloting and began ruling by decree. However, leading up to the abolition of slavery, Cuba gained great prosperity from their sugar trade. The Spanish had ordered regulations on trade with Cuba, which kept the island from becoming a dominant sugar producer. Palo Monte, or Regla de Palo Monte, is one of the main currents in Cuban popular religion. The main variant of Palo Monte is known as the Regla de Palo Monte Kimbisa, based on cabildos –or associations- of former slaves. Followers of Palo Monte are known as “paleros”. Palo Monte has its roots in the Congo basin of central Africa, from where large numbers of African slaves were brought to Cuba. Accordingly, a large part of Palo liturgy (chants and invocations) is a mixture of the Spanish and Kikongo languages, though it includes elements of Yorùbá, Arabic, and French.
