Grau was followed by Carlos Prío Socarrás, also elected democratically, but whose government was tainted by increasing corruption and violent incidents among political factions. Eduardo Chibás was the leader of the Partido Ortodoxo (Orthodox Party), a liberal democratic group, who was widely expected to win in 1952 on an anticorruption platform. This extraterritorial U.S. legislation is considered highly controversial, and the US embargo was condemned for the 13th time in 2004 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, by 179 countries. Additionally, US Congress members from both parties have openly criticized the ongoing balance of resources which have been committed to enforcing this embargo. President Gerardo Machado, originally elected by popular vote in 1925, was constitutionally barred from reelection. He decided to stay in power anyway as the head of a military government with some support from the United States. In 1933, a number of liberal Cubans staged an uprising which deposed Machado and led to a series of short-lived governments. Lukumí ritual is highly secretive and primarily transmitted orally. Known practices include animal offering, ecstatic dance, and sung invocations to the Orishas. Chickens are the most common form of sacrifice; their blood is offered to the Orisha. Drum music and dancing are used to induce a trance state in specific participants, who may become possessed by an Orisha who then speaks through them. One's ancestors, egun, are held in high esteem in Lukumí. Cuba's precarious economic position is complicated by the high price it must pay for foreign financing. These reforms did not dampen the Cuban spirit for independence. José Martí Pérez, Cuba's national hero, began the final push for independence in 1895. He is joined by many veterans of the Ten Year War including Generals Máximo Gómez, Antonio Maceo and Calixto García. On May 19, José Martí is killed in the Battle of Dos Ríos. In 1896, General Maceo is successful in taking the war to the westernmost provinces, such as Mantua, of Cuba, although he is killed on December 7 in the Battle of Punta Brava.
